When the 18-year-old George Frideric Handel came to Hamburg to learn what the dazzling realm of opera was all about, he sat in the violins, in the words of his friend Johann Mattheson, as if he could not count "to five". A year later, he brought out his first stage work, and by the age of twenty-one he had already won the hearts of the Italians - a jack-of-all-trades for whom no task was too difficult. Even where the clergy forbade opera performances, the "dear Saxon", as they called him, created dramatic sparks: the two cantatas about the sorceress Armida, abandoned by her lover, and the doomed mother of Emperor Nero are highly explosive monodramas that still bewitch audiences today - especially when they are staged by an artist like Amanda Forsythe. One is grateful for the instrumental relaxation breaks that separate the enchanting "pocket operas".
