Tommaso Traëtta was 39 years old when he was appointed choirmaster of the Venetian Ospedaletto dei Derelitti in 1766, one of those "homes" for orphan girls in which music played a central role. At that time, the man from Bari had gained an international reputation with his opere serie, and in his new post, which he was to hold for around ten years, he also succeeded in increasing his own reputation and that of his protégés - particularly with the oratorio recorded here about King Solomon worshipping the Ark of the Covenant in the temple. Traëtta set this spiritual work about the legendary ruler of the Israelites, in which the Queen of Sheba, the priest Sadok and Adon, the lord of the Ammonites, play the leading roles, so elegantly that the Latin piece took on the melodious grace of an Italian singspiel. The success was significant and will remain true to King Solomon thanks to this recording.
