Luna Pearl Woolf: Fire and Flood

From a deeply moving mass to hauntingly reinvented masterpieces by Leonard Cohen, "Fire and Flood" covers 25 years of vocal works by composer Luna Pearl Woolf, performed by the Trinity Wall Street Choir and cellist Matt Haimovitz under the direction of Julian Wachner. Woolf belongs to a new, young generation of politically conscious, artistically progressive composers. She was praised by the New York Times for her "psychological nuances and emotional depth". The album includes her frequently performed cello choir concert "Après moi, le déluge", which deals with the tragic consequences of Hurricane Katrina, the dramatic "To the Fire" with its prophetic Old Testament text and the "Missa in Fines Orbis Terrae", which travels to the ends of the earth in search of revelation, mercy, peace. Two original arrangements for three voices and cello by Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" and "Who By Fire" as well as "One to One to One", in which the typically male view of the world is broken through strong female voices, complete this exciting show of works.
