Soft Machine released their third album "Third" in 1970, a double album with each side of the vinyl containing a single long composition. The music explores jazz fusion the way Miles Davis recorded his "Bitches Brew", released just a few months earlier. "Third" marks perhaps Soft Machine's biggest musical departure as they make their way from psych to jazz. The album is considered a milestone in the Canterbury scene, with communication between Mike Ratledge on keyboards, Robert Wyatt on drums, Hugh Hopper on bass and newest member Elton Dean on saxophone.
