Cavalli's Artemisia, premiered in Venice in 1657, was once again a great success thanks to the composer's expressive musical language, which is able to achieve the greatest effects with the smallest of means. The variety of passions and, in particular, their changes in the course of the plot are reflected here in a richness of expressive forms that offers a conceivably wide range of possibilities between secco recitatives and arias. Thanks to the excellent soloists around Claudio Cavina and La Venexiana, we can now enjoy it just as much as the Venetian audience did in its day.
