1701: Lully had been dead for 14 years when the 45-year-old Marin Marais published his 2ème Livre de pièces de violes, which included the Tombeau pour Monsieur de Lully. Marais' memoir composition is fascinating because, in contrast to numerous legends, it appears almost like a direct description of the "Surintendant". As a répétiteur and gambist at the opera under Lully's direction, Marais had had his share of experience with Lully's genius, but also with his moods. It is perhaps no coincidence that this tombeau crowns the Suite in B minor, a bittersweet composition in a key that was described at the time as morose and melancholy.
