in 1715, Johann Mattheson became music director at Hamburg Cathedral and thus took the opportunity to mix sacred music with the theatrical style. During his 13 years of service, he composed 24 oratorios for high feast days and Lent. The exquisite musical quality of the work is impressive. The vocal parts are very demanding, as they were written for the soloists of the Hamburg Gänsemarktoper, the first "German-language" opera house, where the young Mattheson worked alongside greats such as Handel, Graupner and Kaiser. The work, described as an "oratorio" in the autograph, was first performed in 1727 under the direction of the composer.
