FAE, »Frei, aber einsam« (Free but lonely) was the life's motto of the young violinist Joseph Joachim, and on the occasion of a visit three musician friends composed a violin sonata for him on his motto's initial letters. The friends were Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Albert Dietrich, whose contribution to this three-man project has kept his name alive at least among a few music experts. At the time Dietrich, Oldenburg court music director from 1861 to 1891, was a highly esteemed composer whose works were frequently performed. An additional guarantee of quality comes from Brahms, who not only treasured Dietrich as a friend, often visiting him in Oldenburg to perform music with him, but also valued him very highly as a composer. The Oldenburg State Orchestra, led by the Oldenburg general music director Alexander Rumpf and reflecting on its history and the responsibility going along with it, has joined forces with two illustrious guests to present the three most important works of the man who was its most renowned conductor.
