That Joseph Eybler (1765-1846) was not only one of W. A. Mozart's closest friends but also a highly respectable composer himself has already been shown by our publication of his Requiem (CD: 669 20 07). Hardly any other contemporary has come as close to Mozart in the intensity and inner seriousness of his musical language as Eybler. This is also shown by his Christmas Oratorio "The Shepherds by the Manger in Bethlehem", composed in 1794. It is a melody-saturated, almost operatic work. "From the impressive bravura aria of the opera seria to the depiction of nature, from the presentation of intimate feelings to humorous detail, Eybler's vivid creative power ranges from the imagination to the humorous detail," says Wolfgang Helbich, the conductor of our first recording of this wonderful new discovery.
