Our collection of -unknown- Christmas oratorios is growing impressively and joyfully. After Joseph Eybler in October, I can even announce two trouvaillas for this month. There is the Christmas Oratorio of Carl Heinrich Graun (1703-1759), the Kapellmeister of Frederick the Great. It was recently recovered in Washington. An exact dating is not yet possible, but surely it originated in Graun's pre-Berlin time in Dresden or Braunschweig. Be that as it may, it is a masterpiece on the threshold to a sensitive style. Particularly captivating is the well-balanced alternation of melodically accentuated and contrapuntally strictly worked choral movements, of emotional, colourfully instrumented arias and harmonically far-reaching recitatives. Ingrid Schmithüsen, Lena Susanne Norin, Markus Schäfer and Klaus Mertens are our soloists. Hermann Max conducts his Rheinische Kantorei and Das Kleine Konzert on historical instruments.
