Newly Discovered Telemann Oratorio. The existence of Georg Philipp Telemann's oratorio Der aus der Loewengrube errettete Daniel (Daniel, Delivered from the Lions' Den) for the Feast of St. Michael was completely unknown until recently. All of the extant copies were incorrectly ascribed to Handel. Today we know not only that Telemann was clearly its composer but also the name of the librettist – Albrecht Jacob Zell – and the date of the premiere – 1731 in St. Peter's Church in Hamburg. This sensational discovery was first presented to the public in a concert at the International Scholarly Conference held in conjunction with the Eighteenth Magdeburg Telemann Festival Days in 2006. Daniel thus must now be seen as a brilliant high point of one of Telemann's most unusual annual cycles of liturgical music, the so-called oratorio or Zell year of 1730 / 31. The work is so genuinely Telemannian – enormously colorful, highly imaginative, and always hitting the dramatic point on target – that one can only wonder how it was ever ascribed to anybody else!
