Pachelbel: Easter Cantatas

"A man of praise earned by wisdomful notes, never die: The muse has forbidden it." With this epigram, Johann Mattheson decided on the Pachelbel article of his basis of an honorary gate of 1740 and thus not only expressed his high esteem for the Nuremberg master, but also decisively opposed the neglect of his already then almost forgotten work. Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706), today almost only known for his "Canon and Gigue", was born in Nuremberg, where he returned to after his usual years as an organist at St. Sebaldus. His music - for organ as well as for vocal work - enjoyed extraordinary popularity, since it was "more perfect than one had done before", as Johann Gottfried Walther judged. With his ensembles Musica Fiata and La Capella Ducale, Roland Wilson has now re-recorded a representative cross-section of Pachelbel's sacred vocal work, with the compilation of the works following the "red thread" of a hypothetical Nuremberg vespers service on one of the Easter holidays.
