Of all the major works that Erich Wolfgang Korngold has created, his fifth and last opera Die Kathrin is the least known. This is due on the one hand to the political upheavals during the 1930s and on the other to the anti-Romantic reactions of the 1950s The premiere at the Vienna State Opera planned for 1938 was prevented by the invasion of Austria by the Nazis, and the delayed Vienna premiere in 1950 failed because the melodious score was in complete contradiction to the strict post-war taste Brendan G.
