Since Georg Philipp Telemann himself was a baritone, it is not surprising that his more than 1, 400 extant sacred cantatas include a great many compositions for solo bass. The dramatic character of the five Telemann cantatas recorded here was an extraordinary and enthralling element in its times and one that had been largely unknown in this form in the sacred music of the late seventeenth century. In this connection the author of our booklet text speaks or »cantata theater« of »sacred music theater.« In the passion cantatas we are quickly drawn into the events being depicted, and already in one of the earliest extant cantatas, »Ich will den Kreuzweg gehen, « a dramatic monologue with an emotionally charged commitment to the Way of the Cross is followed (in keeping with the dramaturgy of the baroque opera) by an objective and sober secco recitative which then goes over into deeply felt arias. In the other cantatas too Klaus Mertens, in the role of Jesus or as the narrator, together with the Accademia Daniel under Shalev Ad-El, uniquely and vividly conveys Jesus' agony and anguish to the listener and does not leave her or him unmoved.
