Börresen: Symphony 1 / Nordic Folk Tunes

The Dane Hakon Borresen (1876-1954) is a concern of cpo. The 2nd and 3rd symphonies are already available. Chamber music as well; only the 1st Symphony is still missing. Here it is: The 25-year-old composer's grandiose debut, premiered with great success in Copenhagen in 1901. His tonal language is already fully developed here: the elegiac tone reminiscent of Tchaikovsky, the supple, brilliant instrumentation and the always inspired theme: a real gem of a symphony! Our portrait is rounded off by two late works: the Serenade for horn, strings and timpani from 1944, which actually belonged in the not-so-abundant repertoire of every horn player, and the Nordic Folk Melodies from 1949, whose motifs were recorded by Johan Svendsen in 1867 during a trip to Iceland and the Faroe Islands and have now been turned into an atmospheric orchestral suite by Börresen. Ole Schmidt conducts the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra. The horn soloist is Xiao-Ming Han.
