"Nina Simone in Concert" was her first album for the Philips record label and was recorded at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1964. It marked the beginning of Simone's explicitly civil rights-oriented music with clearly political songs such as "Mississippi Goddamn", but also songs such as "Old Jim Crow", "Go Limp" and "Pirate Jenny", which contained political messages in a metaphorical way.
