Skalkottas was one of Schönberg's best composition students, and it is easy to forget that he began his career as a violinist at concert level. The concertos heard here bear witness to this duality of violinist and composer.
The concerto for violin, viola and wind orchestra appears here as the first recording, based on the first critical edition by George Zacharias, who is also the soloist in both concertos. The concertos were composed at the end of the 1930s during a difficult time in his life. In view of the political situation, Skalkottas could no longer stay in Berlin and returned to his native Athens.
There he worked on further developing his compositional language. The result was an idiosyncratic system known as "fractal serialism". In its complexity, the music also contains references to tonality, classical forms and reflections on the music of military bands and jazz. Two mature works by the Greek modernist.
