Stenhammar's string quartets were written between 1894 and 1916, unique in Scandinavian music of the time in terms of their consistency as well as musical ambition. On the basis of these works, the composer's development can be traced very well, beginning as a full Romantic and finding more and more to a sparse, formally concentrated idiom, which finally emancipates itself completely from late Romantic conventions.
For the first time, the Stenhammar Quartet has presented all the works in this genre on SACD, including a String Quartet in F that Stenhammar withdrew upon completion. The series has received international attention and praise, both for the interpretation and the quality of the works. The Guardian critic wrote: "No doubt, Stenhammar is unquestionably one of the great unknown masters of this genre."
