Unlike Grieg, Nielsen and Sibelius, Stenhammar never attained the status of a musical icon in his native country Sweden. On this new SACD recording of Wilhelm Stenhammar’s String Quartets 3-6, the Oslo String Quartet impressively demonstrates that he merits much greater representation in today’s concert world than is currently the case.
It has been said that Stenhammar’s six string quartets are the most important written between those of Brahms and Bartok. Tonally, they range from the middle late Romantics to a style akin to mature Sibelius.
