It was thanks to tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec that Thelonious Monk met Alfred Lion, the co-founder of the Blue Note label, in 1947. The producer immediately recognized the originality of the pianist and composer and signed him to a contract. Over the next five years, Monk recorded for the label in various constellations, documenting his unique music. The 12-inch compilation "Genius of Modern Music, Vol. 2", released in 1956, contained first recordings of some of Monk's best-known compositions and established his reputation as an original musical genius.
