With "In The Wee Small Hours", Frank Sinatra had created a melancholy masterpiece in 1955, which was also a huge commercial success. Just one year later, the legendary singer released "Songs for Swingin' Lovers!" Another masterpiece followed, with which he considerably lightened the mood of his many fans. Together, these two albums form an exciting duality: the unhappy lover of the first album enjoys the joys of newfound romance on the second album. Fueled by an orchestra conducted by arranger Nelson Riddle, Sinatra countered the nascent rock'n'roll of Elvis Presley with, as Nick Hasted recently wrote in Uncut, "some hip youthful exuberance from the spirited end of the Great American Songbook."
