The album "Spellbinder", released in 1966 on Impulse! Records in 1966, the Hungarian jazz guitarist Gábor Szabó became known to a wider American audience. On the album, he offered an original mixture of modal jazz, Eastern European folk influences and pop sounds, which he himself described as "pop jazz". In his review for AllMusic, Thom Jurek gave the album 4½ stars and wrote: "Szabó's interpretation of 60s jazz was brilliant. He embodied all its most popular aspirations and combined them with a real spirit of innovation and adventure. 'Spellbinder' is a masterpiece."
