When Peter Giles, Michael Giles and Robert Fripp moved into 93a Brondesbury Road in 1968, the north London apartment soon became a center of creative activity for the trio.
After the frustrations they had experienced recording "The Cheerful Insanity Of Giles, Giles Fripp" for Decca, they felt invigorated and soon converted their apartment into a home studio (consisting of a Revox tape machine), which was frequently visited by former Fairport Convention singer Judy Dyble, the then unknown Ian McDonald and later, in 1969, Greg Lake.
The musical output from this period is often referenced as it gives King Crimson fans an insight into the early incarnation of the band's sound and composition.
The popular Crimson ballad "I Talk To The Wind" appears here in two early versions, one with Peter Giles on vocals and the other with Judy Dyble on vocals.
Parts of Fripp's "Suite No. 1" were later changed to "Prelude: Song Of The Gulls", and his "Why Don't You Just Drop In" became "The Letters" with new lyrics for the 1971 album "Islands".
Also of interest is "Passages Of Time", composed by Fripp, which consists of a driving bolero rhythm and a middle section that would later be heard as "Peace - A Theme" on King Crimson's "In the Wake Of Poseidon".
Although the sound quality is limited in places due to the original source, David Singleton's 2025 remastering has significantly improved the sound compared to previous editions.
