Johann Sebastian Bach's sonatas and partitas are undoubtedly among the most important works ever written for the solo violin. German-American violinist Augustin Hadelich - who made his acclaimed Warner Classics debut in 2018 with Paganini's dazzling 24 Caprices - now demonstrates once again his impeccable technical ability and immense range of musical expression with this recording of Bach's masterpieces.
"I have studied and performed these works all my life, and yet they continue to offer challenges," says Hadelich, who lives in the United States. "In March 2020, the music world came to a standstill. The time of standstill, with its difficult emotions and feelings of uncertainty, was the perfect time to delve into Bach's masterpieces and undertake the enormous project of recording them in their entirety. I hope this music will give as much to listeners as it has given to me."
For the historically informed interpretation, Hadelich chose a baroque bow: "It felt liberating [...]: I realized that I could strike the strings with more energy without having to worry that the sound would become too rough or expressionistic".
