In contrast to the Italian, French or German harpsichord music of the 17th century, the English repertoire is no less important, but is far less well recorded.
With his sensational Byrd recording on ALPHA (ALP073) last year, Gustav Leonhardt undoubtedly focused attention on this hitherto neglected repertoire. This is now followed by another CD with works by William Byrd as a kind of "sequel".
On two wonderful instruments, a harpsichord after Ruckers and a virginal, Bertrand Cuiller beautifully brings out the characteristics of Elizabethan music for keyboard instruments.
