Popis
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Clannad's 1985 album "Macalla" (Irish for "echo"), which was remastered by Phil Kinrade at Air Studios, the ninth studio album was released. It was their first international success and marked a significant milestone in the band's career. It presented a blend of traditional Irish folk roots and a more mainstream, pop-influenced sound. Building on the momentum of earlier successes such as "Theme from Harry's Game" (1982), which attracted international attention and was even used by U2 as outro music for concerts, and the award-winning soundtrack to the television series "Robin of Sherwood" (released in 1984 as the album "Legend"), Clannad was on the verge of a breakthrough in markets such as America. "Macalla" achieved this breakthrough primarily thanks to the legendary duet "In a Lifetime" with Bono from U2. Bono, already an admirer of Clannad, worked with lead singer Moya Brennan on this impressive song, which became a big hit. The collaboration came about through mutual admiration and their shared Irish heritage. "In a Lifetime" was a chart success, reaching number 5 in Ireland and number 20 in the UK. The album "Macalla" itself also did well, charting in the UK and other countries. While some long-time fans of their purely traditional folk sound saw the album's more pop and electronic production as a departure, "Macalla" is generally regarded as one of Clannad's strongest and most influential albums. It successfully combined their folk roots with a more contemporary, atmospheric and new age-influenced sound, appealing to a wider international audience. The album features songs in English and Irish, including 'Caisleán Óir' and 'Buachaill Ón Éirne', sung in their native Gaelic.
