Accentus Music presents with this latest release a recording by the Philharmonics, the ensemble founded by members of the Vienna Philharmonic. Set in one of the original venues of Viennese coffeehouse culture, Café Sperl, the Philharmonics captured the most authentic old Viennese sounds: the Viennese waltzes of Johann Strauss, arranged by Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern. Ninety years after their premiere by the famous composers of the New Viennese School, The Philharmonics now bring these fascinating arrangements to new life with this recording The unusual story of these Strauss waltz arrangements is told in the bonus material: In the fall of 1918, Schönberg had founded the "Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen" (Society for Private Musical Performances) after his works, which were radical by the standards of the time, had been rather rejected by the public. The association quickly ran into financial difficulties. In order to save it from ruin, Schönberg and his students Berg and Webern offered a concert series in May 1921 of popular works of the time - including arrangements of some Strauss waltzes. In the end, it was the composers themselves who performed their arrangements: Berg on the harmonium, Schoenberg on the violin, and Webern on the cello.
