Lucky charm Beethoven: The Kreutzer Sonata with string ensemble
If there is a "work of a lifetime" for every musician, then in Nemanja Radulović's case it is probably Beethoven's violin concerto. "It is perhaps the concerto that I have played most often in public and one that I believe has brought me luck," says the spirited violinist - who actually made his breakthrough with this pinnacle work of classical music when he stood in for Maxim Vengerov. On his new album, Radulović presents the concerto in tandem with another stirring Beethoven classic: the "Kreutzer Sonata".
As with his Warner debut album "Roots" (2022), on which he traced folk sounds from all over the world based on the music of his Serbian homeland, Nemanja Radulović is once again joined by his chamber ensemble Double Sens, founded in 2008. On their journey of discovery through new interpretations, the musicians do without a conductor; the strings even take on the part of the piano in the "Kreutzer Sonata". "It was a real challenge to explore every detail of the piano part and adapt it for string ensemble," says Radulović. The musicians were guided by similar expressive ideals in their interpretation of the violin concerto: "We wanted to show a whole range of emotions... courage, risk, joy, love, anger, sadness and nostalgia, as well as magical longing and tenderness in the second movement." Despite all the interpretative freedom, Nemanja Radulović emphasizes that the basic classical form of the concerto remains untouched.
