Moby has packed into the album "These Systems Are Failing" everything he loves: punk, post-punk, new wave, euphoric rave and a lot of screaming. Friends in the music industry told him they thought the album was "pretty angry." So he went back into the studio and added another layer of rage
These Systems Are Failing was made in Los Angeles. There is a lot of emptiness here. And darkness. D.H. Lawrence once wrote about L.A. and the empty Pacific Ocean - "the void Pacific." Many think of 'void' as a vast, dark emptiness, or the scary abyss in Nietzsche, but Moby liked the paradox of a Pacific, that is, a peaceful abyss. Hence the name Moby & The Pacific Void Choir. He himself cannot offer solutions, but only draw attention to problems
Pop music is certainly not the best medium for complex political issues, but addressing relevant topics through music is something worth striving for. Complex or sensitive issues don't have to sound complicated or oppressive. On the contrary, it can sound joyful and uplifting despite everything. That's how the Bad Brains sang about the threat of Nazis in "Big Takeover" - in a euphoric song, full of energy. Its phrasing may sound drastic and vague at the same time. That's intentional. The album title is meant to be a push: Which systems could be meant? What is wrong with our environment?
