The Damned made history when they became the first British punk band to release their single "New Rose" on October 22, 1976. This was followed shortly afterwards by the very first British punk album, their legendary debut album "Damned Damned Damned", which was released by Stiff Records on February 18, 1977. The album reached number 36 in the British charts on its release and has become a legend in the 45 years since its release. "Damned, Damned, Damned" won the race: it went down in music history as the "first punk rock album" to be released in England. "Never Mind the Bollocks" by the Sex Pistols was released in October of the same year, "The Clash" in April. Released on the Stiff label and produced by Nick Lowe, the band led by singer Dave Vanian, guitarist Brian James, bassist Captain Sensible and drummer Rat Scabies received critical acclaim for delivering an energetic, first-class and rebellious satire on the pop biz. With a playing time of just half an hour, "Damned Damned Damned" is an absolute rock 'n' roll classic. Along with the band's uncompromising aesthetic, The Damned left rhetoric to the theorists and political posturing to The Clash. The four musicians just wanted to rock.
