Nineteen years after his first recital dedicated to the music of Alexander Skriabin, Yevgeny Sudbin returns to the works of this eccentric Russian composer with a new recital that brings together pieces from different phases of his career. Of his special relationship with this composer, Sudbin writes: "I simply cannot think of another composer who consistently evokes such a primal, raw and physical response in me, and over time his influence on me has only intensified."
The program, carefully put together by Sudbin, shows the stylistic development of Skriabin, from his beginnings, when he was still influenced by Chopin and devoted to small forms, through his middle period, in which the rich, late Romantic language is just beginning to move into darker, more complex areas, to his late period, in which, as Sudbin puts it, "one sometimes feels too close to the edge of madness". In his later works, Skriabin actually seems to push the music to its expressive limits in order to create a climate of spiritual ecstasy.
