"Exodus" was still in the UK charts when the follow-up "Kaya" was released on March 23, 1978. This was testament not only to Bob Marley's phenomenal popularity at the time, but also to the man's impressive work ethic and ability to cope with his deteriorating health.
The album's biggest hit, 'Is This Love', was a suitably gentle take on a universal theme. It reached number 9 in the UK charts, a modest placing for a hit that was ubiquitous at the time and has become a modern pop standard. Another love song, "She's Gone" was a stunning tune that received the throwaway treatment and remains one of Marley's most overlooked gems. As the album's second side progressed, darker clouds loomed, including the mysterious "Misty Morning," the heavily syncopated "Crisis" and the existential brooding of "Running Away," which ended with a raw, distorted, mind-altering rap from Marley, quite unlike his usual vocal delivery. The album closed with the unusual, folky-tinged "Time Will Tell" and a typically sombre refrain: "Think you're in heaven but you're living in hell".
"Kaya", which was released in 1978, was the tenth studio album by the Jamaican band Bob Marley & The Wailers and contained tracks that were recorded in parallel to those on the album "Exodus". On "Kaya", the band continued what has become an unspoken tradition in the development of Bob Marley & The Wailers' discography - the blending of Western sounds and motifs with the icons and traditions from the core of Jamaican society.
The album "Kaya", released in 1978, was not necessarily made for American tastes, but it was an album that presented a more accessible version of Bob Marley. Lyrically, the songs avoided political commentary or Rastafarian philosophy, which were prominent on "Natty Dread" and "Rastaman Vibration," and instead emphasized tunes about love and ganga, like "Easy Skanking" and the title track. And the palpable musical tension that bubbled beneath the surface on the Wailers' earlier material gave way to a more relaxed riddim that was more enjoyable, but also slightly less sophisticated. "Kaya" presented a softer and friendlier version of Bob Marley & The Wailers, but it also documented Marley and his group at the height of their powers.
Likewise, "Kaya" could easily be taken as an open love letter or musical paean to the lifestyle Marley so eagerly embraced and promoted. Proof that the spirituality that permeates the Wailers' music is genuine and not lip service.
2026 Analogue Productions presents "Kaya" in sonic perfection - on a Hybrid Multichannel SACD. Playable in all CD and SACD players.
