Francesco Maria Veracini (1690 - 1768) was a peripatetic violin virtuoso whose career (and oddball personal life) took him all over Europe. As a composer he's in the Corelli/Torelli/Tartini mold. This release may be a bit misnamed: we get two overtures, two sonatas and a concerto. (It's labeled "Vol. 1", so I'll be watching for more.) All the pieces are inventive and worthwhile (as long as you're not expecting something on the Bach/Handel level). I was thoroughly entertained. My wife isn't really a classical fan, but she really enjoyed this disc, which just goes to show you that the two-hundred-and-fifty year old music of a "minor" composer is still universal enough to reach across the centuries and touch a modern listener.
